Kabutocho's Multifaceted Transformation

Kabutocho's Multifaceted Transformation

My own image of Kabutocho changed significantly, apparently due to the closure of the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s open-outcry trading floor in 1999, brought about by the digitization of stock certificates and the rise of internet trading. On that former trading floor, it’s said that over 2,000 people from securities firms gathered daily as floor brokers, communicating buy and sell orders by exchanging hand signals. Back then, Kabutocho was a street bustling with businesspeople dressed in suits. That image of the street gradually, little by little, began to change after the trading floor closed. Lately, I see many more people in casual everyday clothes, and it seems like there are more women and families too. It feels like it’s becoming a street loved by all kinds of people as a place to stroll. Looking back, it was around this time that I started stepping into Kabutocho myself and began enjoying walking around the area.

Looking around Kabutocho once more, one can see through its many historical sites and existing buildings how it has supported Japan’s economic development as a financial and securities district. A plaque reading “Birthplace of Japanese Banking” is affixed to the exterior wall of the current Mizuho Bank Kabutocho Branch, indicating that Japan’s first bank, the First National Bank, was founded here by Eiichi Shibusawa. Shibusawa Eiichi’s residence was also located in Kabutocho, but it was destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake. The building constructed on its former site is the “Nissho-kan.” Owned by Heiwa Real Estate, known as the “landlord of Kabutocho,” and housing its headquarters, this building was constructed in 1943 (Showa 3). It has undergone multiple renovations and remains in use today. Additionally, the auspicious stone “Sado Red Stone,” which Shibusawa Eiichi placed at his Kabutocho residence to pray for Japan’s economic prosperity, is now displayed in the atrium of “KABUTO ONE,” Kabutocho’s new landmark. Exploring Kabutocho’s streets might be best started by visiting these historical spots.

On the other hand, what mechanisms were put in place to enable Kabutocho to achieve its current level of vibrancy? First, the K5, which opened in 2020, renovated a former bank building (the former annex of Daiichi Kokuritsu Bank) from about 100 years ago. By combining multiple functions—hotel, restaurant, café, bar, and beer hall—it attracts diverse visitors who linger for extended periods. I myself am one such visitor, enjoying craft beer in the basement beer hall. Then, in 2021, “KABUTO ONE” opened as Kabutocho’s new landmark. The low-rise atrium features one of the world’s largest cube-shaped LED displays, along with conference facilities and a library lounge designed to serve as a hub for investor and corporate networking. Furthermore, Hyatt’s latest lifestyle hotel brand, “Caption by Hyatt,” is scheduled to open in 2025. It promises to be a place where guests can stay in Kabutocho and experience activities unique to this neighborhood.

The historical assets of Kabutocho, which has supported Japan’s economic development as a financial and securities district. The appeal of newly developed facilities as hubs for interaction. And the multitude of distinctive restaurants. Perhaps it is this overlapping of layers, both temporal and cultural, that captivates visitors to this neighborhood. For instance, after savoring the signature dice-cut steak at Bambolina—a Western-style restaurant where traders once requested, “We don’t even have time to cut our steak, so please serve it pre-cut”—you might then head to the newly opened Heiwa Doburoku Kabutocho Brewery, established by a Wakayama sake brewery, to sample freshly made doburoku. Such multi-layered pleasures are unique to Kabutocho. I hope everyone will follow their own unique layered path and savor it to the fullest.
